Ginger prides itself on providing our guests with a tantalizing selection of world-class menu and wine list options. We are therefore particularly proud of our most recent accomplishment: Ginger was awarded Platinum at this year’s Annual Diners Club Wine List Awards for the Eastern Region. We are absolutely delighted to be given recognition for our wine lit and look forward to welcoming guests to sample our great wines and food.

The Diners Club Wine List Awards encourage restaurants to consistently improve upon their wine offering by creating wine lists that not only complement their food, but also offer a variety of different styles and a varied selection of wines from numerous different wineries, both big and small. This year’s judging panel was chaired by the internationally esteemed wine convener for Diners Club, Dave Hughes, with the high-profile judging panel including the likes of, Fiona McDonald, wine judge and former editor of WINE magazine, Clive Torr, Garagiste Winemaker and wine educator and well-known hospitality industry personality Gawie Marx.

Ginger was one of just two Eastern Cape restaurants to be awarded the prestigious Platinum award which represents a score between 80% and 100% for the judging criteria for their wine list.

Ginger invites you to come and enjoy some “Sole Food” this April with its “Sole Sale”.

Widely regarded as one of the best in the world, the East Coast Sole rivals the famed Dover Sole found on menus of some of the top restaurants in the UK. Ginger’s chefs have let their imagination run wild to create a solefull menu using this magnificent ocean delight.

Ginger spreads the love this Valentine’s Day

Ginger, one of Port Elizabeth’s finest beach front restaurants, will be hosting a Valentine’s Day dinner for 100 guests, who will be dining under the stars at The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

The event will be taking place on Saturday 12 February 2011 and all proceeds will go to the Nelson Mandela Bay Community Chest. Diners will be tempted with a delectable menu created by the Beach Hotel’s Head Chef, Paul Bain, using ingredients sponsored by Pick & Pay.

The Community Chest of the Nelson Mandela Metropole is one of the oldest charitable organisations in South Africa, serving Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Despatch. It has been a leading role player in the welfare sector of the local community for the past 56 years. Currently, the Chest supports almost 50 welfare beneficiaries on behalf of the donors. All donations from corporate businesses, trusts, foundations and individuals are allocated to a wide range of beneficiaries who directly serve individuals and communities in need.

King Abdullah of Jordan dines at Ginger

KING Abdullah II of Jordan flew in to Port Elizabeth yesterday to begin a journey along the Garden Route to Cape Town – on one of the many Harley-Davidson motorbikes he owns.

His private jet, an Airbus 340, was seen parked at the Port Elizabeth airport yesterday.

The heavily guarded king, who was apparently only spending one night in Port Elizabeth, spent the day riding around enjoying all that the Bay had to offer.

He was spotted riding his Harley-Davidson in the Cape Recife and Willows area.

He also dropped in at the popular Sacramento restaurant at Schoenmakerskop for a cup of rooibos tea.

Then it was off for lunch at beachfront restaurant Ginger.

Manager Jacques Lombard said: “He was very pleasant person.

“All he wanted was a hamburger and his partner had a steak.

“They were nice, but their security guards were a bit over the top.

“At least they tipped well.”

While attempting to get a picture of King Abdullah as he entered the Protea Marine Hotel, a photographer from The Herald was assaulted by the bodyguards.

The guards, members of the SAPS VIP protection unit, drew handguns as they ran across the hotel‘s parking lot towards the photographer. They forced his hands behind his back, ripped the camera from his neck and pinned him against a wall.

The king plans to leave at about lunchtime today on his Garden Route adventure.

Born in 1962, Abdullah completed his education at Sandhurst Military College in the United Kingdom.

He is married to Queen Rania and the couple have two sons.

Abdullah is a keen motorcyclist and used to commute by bike when he lived in England.

He is also a helicopter pilot.
